The Best and Worst of Statistical Graphics

This Gallery of Data Visualization displays some examples of the Best and Worst of Statistical Graphics, with the view that the contrast may be useful, inform current practice, and provide some pointers to both historical and current work. They go from what is arguably the best statistical graphic ever drawn, to the current record-holder for the worst. See The Gallery of Data Visualization

Four indicted in Nigerian e-mail scam

"Global fraudsters need to know that we are determined to find and prosecute them," U.S. Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf of the Eastern District of New York said in a statement. "Potential victims need to know that any e-mail offering millions of dollars that requires that they send money to receive this windfall is a scheme. Delete it." Three of the defendants were arrested in Amsterdam by Dutch authorities on Feb. 21, based on a U.S. criminal complaint. They are being held by the Dutch authorities pending extradition to the U.S., the DOJ said. The fourth defendant, a Nigerian citizen, is a fugitive. Read More

Rejuvenating the creative mind

Every now and then, its good to get away from the daily grind and head up to Truckee, stay in a house with great views and relax in a hot tub. Maybe even watch that movie you got from Netflix but never had the time to. Don't worry. If the DVD player doesn't work, Blue Sky will bring you one that does. These guys are great. They certainly go out of their way to make your mountain getaway a relaxing experience. After you've relaxed and unwound, get up and hit the slopes. Its great for rejuvenating the creative mind. When you find that you just can't leave Truckee because you love it so much, Blue Sky can find you a house to buy or even build one for you. So check out a Truckee vacation rental or a ski lease soon. Before you completely loose your mind from the grind. The folks at Blue Sky really know what they are doing. See for yourself.

Analog Audio Tape Cassette Nostalgia from Tapedeck.org

The compact audio cassette medium for audio storage was introduced by Philips in 1963. Its use in the West has declined as a result of more advanced technologies. However, it remains widespread, and is still the dominant medium for listening to music in many third world countries. Tapedeck.org is a project of neckcns.com, built to showcase the amazing beauty and (sometimes) weirdness found in the designs of the common audio tape cassette. There's an amazing range of designs, starting from the early 60's functional cassette designs, moving through the colourful playfulness of the 70's audio tapes to amazing shape variations during the 80's and 90's. I hope you enjoy these tapes as much as I do.

Han Solo Switch Parody

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Check out this Han Solo switch parody I tracked down on Google today. Now I have to admit I am a Star Wars fan but this guy is kind of a dork. Although if you make it to the end of the video you will get a little chuckle.

Wild accidents captured in Russia's new Lefortovo Tunnel

Security cameras in Russia's recently-completed Lefortovo Tunnel captured some pretty wild high-speed car accidents. The 3.2 km tunnel appears rather cramped, but that doesn't stop any of these drivers from traveling at ridiculous speeds, nor has it prevented from being generally careless.

Embrio: The Answer to the Segway

Like the Segway, Bombardier's Embrio concept--a prototype that may or may not make production--uses gyroscope technology to balance riders but adds a dash of flair absent in the Segway, which we as car nuts find slightly nerdy. Read More.

Cassini Discovers Potential Liquid Water on Enceladus

On March 9th, NASA announced that the Cassini spacecraft had spotted geysers of ice and water vapor shooting from the surface of Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons. This discovery may be evidence that resevoirs of liquid water can be found slightly below the moon's surface. If true, Enceladus would be the environment most conducive to life found in our solar system. NASA's news release can be found here.

Using sprites with CSS

Key to success: A whole lot of hard work

When asked what keeps Dublin's economy strong, print shop owner Les Jacob doesn't hesitate to answer. "You have to work hard," he said. "You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket, and you've got to keep your eye on the numbers. (Some printers) were going out and buying million dollar presses for their client. When that client went away, they still had to make payments on the press." Read More | Select Imaging website
