Could This Be The 'Big One' For Devil's Slide?
PACIFICA - With little roadbed left, Caltrans officials say the troublesome Devil's Slide stretch of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara may never reopen after the latest series of landslides -- triggered by nearly five weeks of rains -- have left the roadway heavily damaged and impassable. Caltrans crews were to drill some 150 feet into the remaining roadway on Friday in an effort to gauge the extent of the current slide. "The last time it slid like this was a winter when we had 30 days of rain in January (1995)," said Caltrans spokesman Jeff Weiss. "We almost had 30 days of rain in March...There's not a lot of roadbed left. The concrete barrier is right at the end of the cliff so there's always the potential that this might be the 'Big One.' I hope that it's not, but that road is not going to last forever. We don't know if it's this time or the next time." read the full article
